Australian Open: One Match from Major No. 25

Melbourne supplied the clearest evidence that Djokovic can still build a championship-level major run. He beat world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinal, then won the opening set of the final against Carlos Alcaraz before losing 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.

It was Djokovic's first defeat in 11 Australian Open finals. The result left him with 10 titles in Melbourne and 24 majors overall, but also gave him a final appearance at age 39 against the two players leading the current rankings era.

The Injury Gap and the Clay-Court Return

After losing to Jack Draper in the Indian Wells fourth round, Djokovic missed more than six weeks with injury. Rome was his only clay-court match before Roland-Garros, and he lost it after winning the first set against Dino Prižmić.

In Paris, Djokovic reached the third round and led João Fonseca by two sets before losing a match that lasted nearly five hours. Fonseca became the first teenager to beat Djokovic at a major. The collapse from two sets ahead was striking, but the larger context was an interrupted preparation rather than a full clay schedule.

Wimbledon: Records Extended, No. 25 Delayed

Djokovic's Wimbledon run combined durability with history. He passed Roger Federer for the most men's match wins at the tournament, reaching 107 after his quarterfinal, and advanced to a record 15th men's singles semifinal. At 39, he became only the second man in the Open Era aged 39 or older to reach the last four.

The quarterfinal against Félix Auger-Aliassime lasted five hours and 15 minutes — the longest Wimbledon quarterfinal on record. Djokovic won 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(10-4), received leg treatment, and finished minutes before the tournament's curfew.

Two days later, Sinner won the semifinal 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic said the previous round had taken a physical toll, while also making clear that he intended to keep competing rather than treat the loss as a retirement announcement.

Djokovic's Grand Slam Record

Djokovic owns the men's record with 24 Grand Slam singles titles: 10 Australian Opens, three Roland-Garros titles, seven Wimbledons, and four US Opens. His most recent major title came at the 2023 US Open.

The number 25 matters because it would extend the men's record and move him beyond Margaret Court's 24 singles majors. It is a live opportunity, not a forecast. In 2026, he has reached one major final and one semifinal but has not converted either run into a title.

What Is Novak Djokovic's Next Tournament?

Djokovic's next entered tournament is the National Bank Open in Montreal, with main-draw play scheduled from 2–13 August. He is a four-time Canadian champion with a 37–7 event record, but has not played the tournament since 2018. If he starts, it will be his 12th appearance.

An entry is not a final confirmation. Fitness, travel, and a late withdrawal can still change the field, so the published draw and order of play remain the last checks.

Djokovic is also on the official US Open entry list. The New York main draw runs from 30 August to 13 September and represents his final opportunity to win a major in 2026.

What the Rest of 2026 Is Really Measuring

Djokovic's season is no longer best measured by how many ordinary weeks he dominates. The useful questions are whether his body can recover between long best-of-five matches, whether a selective schedule gives him enough repetition, and whether he can still take three consecutive elite opponents out of a major draw.
